Hobart orienteer Cathy McComb has won the silver medal in the Dolomites 3-Day event held last weekend in Italy.
After coming third on each of the first 2 days, Cathy reports she ran conservatively in the steep and rocky terrain on Day 3 in an attempt to retain her podium position. Despite losing 2-3 minutes at one control in 'a Bermuda triangle of lost orienteers in the middle of some huge rock pillars', she managed to relocate and was 6th on Day 3 - good enough to make second overall. Well done Cathy! The rest of the McComb family had solid runs, and all loved the wonderful scenery - 'beautiful mountain flowers and cows with bells, and wooden chalets and cute villages'
Several other Tasmanians were orienteering in Europe last week. Paul Pacque, Bert Elson and Jan Hardy have been in the French Alps at the French 5-Days, where Paul was 5th in M65. Bert reported that to get to the start of one event they had a chairlift ride for miles up the mountainside followed by a 1.7 km walk. Andrea Schiwy and Martin and Liz Bicevskis were at the World Masters Orienteering Championships in Riga, Latvia.
