Launceston's City Park provided a wonderful challenge for forty five enthusiastic orienteers as they met the challenge of Tasmania’s first World Orienteering Day event in Northern Tasmania.
The four loop course was arranged so that competitors did not know how they fared until the end. Darkness added an interesting challenge to mastering the map and course in the fastest time.
Fastest competitor was Australian Junior representative Joseph Dickinson. Dickinson completed the course in 11 minutes 16 seconds, 24 seconds faster than second placed Carlin White. Third fastest was Launceston Church Grammar School student Bayley Fisher.
The night event gave orienteers some valuable practice for a weekend of sprint orienteering planned for the June Long Weekend.The Launceston Sprint Extravaganza will comprise 6 events over three days with two events being night events. Venues will range from school campuses to city parks and include one bush setting.
