You need to enter by Sunday night! March long weekend up at St Helens.
This long weekend in March sees the traditional opening of the 2020 Tasmanian orienteering season with 3 events brought to you by EVOC. You can find out the nitty gritty and ENTER HERE.
You will need to enter by Sunday 1 March!
Here are the events on offer:
Saturday 7 March - "Mystery Event" (start @ 2pm and the course setter is Paul Pacque)
Sunday 8 March - Long distance (OST 1) (start from 9:30am on courses brought to you by Joe Dickinson)
Monday 9 March - Middle distance (OST 2) (start from 9:30am thanks to course setter Christine Brown)
All the events are on the Golden Fleece maps, which you can check out on the Australian Orienteering Championships 2020 website.
Enter now for Coles Bay on Sunday 29 March.
Enter now for Coles Bay! The forest is looking so good for orienteering, with low bracken and good runnability. It's a terrific opportunity to practice orienteering in complex granite before Easter.
And the courses will be great, with Bernard course setting and Clare controlling. They're using the same area of the map as the 2015 World Cup middle distance.
And as another bonus - on Saturday 28 March - Cathy is running a night-o score event around the Coles Bay township. Pre entry required for both events!
Catch the March issue of the Australian Orienteer.
The latest Australian Orienteer is here!
It's another edition not to be missed with over 16 maps! Some of those are by Frédéric Tranchand, Victoria's Coach-in-Residence, who has been showing some training techniques to orienteers young and old. Tash Key chats with Swiss ace Daniel Hubmann. Spot the Difference brings you the World Cup Middle Distance map used in China, O-SPY has been out and about covering all kinds of subjects, and Duncan Currie's famous "Jeff" comics get several spots in related articles.
Braving the Weather at Waterworks
Well done the 170 people who braved cold winds and frequent showers to enjoy the courses set by first-timers Tara and Geoff Powell on Wednesday. Final results in the Southern Autumn Series will be calculated on your best 4 runs of the first 5 events. The sixth event is the Southern Schools Championships – more about this later.
Cumulative results for the first 3 events are on our website here. There will no doubt be many changes in the lead as peoples’ weakest runs are dropped off for the final count. Trophies will be awarded to schools based on the performances of their top three runners, so please check the results and inform Mike if we have you at the wrong school.
This week we go to Knocklofty to be challenged by courses set by Zali and Jett McComb.
Proposal for OST courses next year.
The OT Board is currently considering changing the way that OST courses are structured, and OST points calculated. Currently, OST points are allocated on an age class basis. The Board is proposing that this model be changed to a course-based structure, which allows any orienteer to run any course (subject to their navigation and fitness levels), and still accumulate OST points. You are encouraged to respond.
